Designer's Statement
Throughout this project, my aim was to create a publication with a bold and impactful presence. I utilized thick sans-serif fonts for headings and titles, along with a bright red color scheme, intending to evoke a sense of urgency and caution in the audience. Feedback from viewers has highlighted the digital, code-like feel of the chosen typefaces, aligning with the intended design concept. Through iterative refinement, I balanced my design style with the need for clarity and simplicity, ensuring that the visual communication effectively conveys the subject matter's tone and message while maintaining readability.
First Iterations
Design Critique
In the project's initial phases, I encountered challenges in defining the creative direction for the spreads and the overall publication's trajectory. During a class critique, I received feedback highlighting the excessive intensity of the original spreads, characterized by prominent black and red sections that hindered text legibility against the background. In response, I opted to streamline the initial designs, embracing a more minimalist approach. This process involved numerous iterations of the spreads, where a key challenge was maintaining the design's distinctive style while avoiding excessive complexity and visual overload.
Final Designs
Reflection
When I initially came into this assignment, I didn’t have much prior experience with Adobe InDesign. However, once I overcame the initial learning curve for the software, I found that the true challenge of this assignment lay in the decisions that you have to make when tasked with large bodies of text. I played around with type size, column width, and layout to make sure that all of the text could fit on the two page spreads and still maintain readability. I am proud that I was able to accomplish this after a bit of trial and error, as well as learn about the finer details of typesetting. I am also proud that I was able to gain confidence using the software more efficiently and effectively.
